Even if you have a great memory, it is not impossible to forget a password. Nowadays, one has to remember so many passwords - each supposed to contain a number, a unique character, capital letters and hair plucked from the tail of a unicorn - that forgetting passwords is pretty common. When this happens with an email service or a social media account, you can always reset the password.
But what if one day you find yourself locked out of your laptop because you cant remember the password?
If you use an admin account as your primary account - most people do whether they realise it or not - Microsoft provides no way to a user to reset the password. Actually there is a way - the recovery disk. But again, hardly anyone uses a recovery disk. Nowadays, not many laptops come with a recovery disk. And while a recovery disk can be created, most users dont bother.
Coming back to the original question: What should you do if you forget your laptop password?
One way is to get hold of a Windows disk and reinstall the OS. This will remove the password from your computer. But then this will also remove all your data and applications from the primary disk. So, it is not recommended.
The better option is Lazesoft Recover My Password, a program that can reset the Windows password.
To use Lazesoft Recover My Password, here are the steps you will need to follow:
-- Download and install Recover My Password on a Windows computer. Obviously, this cant be the laptop on which you are trying to reset the password.
-- Plug in an empty pen drive into the machine where you have installed Recover My Password. Once the pen drive is recognised by the computer, run the Lazesoft program.
-- Click on Burn Bootable CD/USB Disk Now!
-- In the next window, specify the operating system of the laptop that is locked.
-- Hit next and choose the pen drive that is connected to the laptop and click Start.
The program may download some files related to the operating system you had selected and will copy them into the pen drive. It will also turn pen drive into a bootable drive.
Once the process is finished, close Recover My Password, eject the pen drive.
-- Now, put this pen drive into the laptop that is locked.
-- Click power button. This can be a tricky part. You have to boot from the pen drive while most laptops are configured to boot from their harddisk. So you will have to go into the BIOS by hitting a specific key. This key is flashed on the screen while booting and mostly it is F12. But if it some other key, use that. Once you are in BIOS, you have to select the option that says boot form USB drive.
-- Booting into BIOS and then booting from the pen drive may take a while and several tries. If you dont succeed, restart the computer and again try to get into the BIOS. The point here is that Windows should not start. Instead you should directly boot into the Recover My Password through the pen drive.
-- Once you have booted into the Recover My Password, it will show you the user accounts on a laptop (likely it is going to be just one unless you had set up several user accounts). Select the user account and reset the password.
Once the password is reset successfully, take out the pen drive and restart your computer.
-- If everything went alright, you would see that password has been removed from your laptop. You can go into settings and set a new password if you want.
